A klingonok békét szeretnének kötni a föderációval. Kirk kapitány és az Enterprise legénysége a békemisszióra küldött klingonit, Gorkont kísérik el az útján. Akadnak azonban mindkét oldalon ellenzői a kiegyezésnek. Merényletet követnek el Gorkon ellen úgy, hogy a gyanú Kirk-re és McCoy-ra terelődjön.
